Natural fibers like cotton, linen, and wool shrink when exposed to water. Pre-shrinking before cutting keeps finished sizes stable. For dark or printed fabrics, test for color bleeding first to avoid staining other clothes. Factory sizing is added to fabric, so washing reveals the true feel and removes residual formaldehyde and loose fibers. That’s why pre-shrinking is a crucial step before sewing \u2014 it effectively prevents deformation and shrinkage after washing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Different fabrics need different pre-shrinking methods. Let’s learn together!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

General pre-shrinking steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This step is suitable for most fabrics, or when you are unsure what kind of fabric it is, you can basically use it without any problem!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Prepare a basin of cold water or warm water below 30\u2103. Do not use hot water, as hot water is a shrinkage accelerator. To exaggerate, you don’t want a meter of cloth to shrink to half a meter, right?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Completely immerse the cloth in water, gently press to allow the water to fully penetrate, and soak for 15-30 minutes. No need to rub, just soak thoroughly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Do not wring the fabric violently during the dehydration process! Roll up the fabric, wrap it with a dry towel, and squeeze out the water, or gently spin it dry in a washing machine (using a laundry bag is strongly recommended), because many fabrics may come tangled during this dehydration process, and using a laundry bag can prevent the fabric from getting stuck together.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. After washing, hang it in a well-ventilated, shady place to dry, avoiding direct sunlight. When it is about 80% dry, iron it flat and it is ready to be cut.     Quick Pre-Shrinking Method<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    If you’re short on time and don’t have time to wash and dry the clothes, you can use the following quick pre-shrinking method:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Steam ironing method:<\/strong> Spray the fabric evenly with a spray bottle, hold the steam setting 2-3 cm away from the fabric and steam evenly, or steam iron directly (not suitable for fabrics with PVC interfacing).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Steam wash in washing machine:<\/strong> Roll up the dry fabric and put it in the washing machine. Select the steam sterilization or air wash function. After it is finished, hang it to cool slightly before cutting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Water spray ironing method: <\/strong>After spraying water evenly, turn the spray bottle to the highest setting and iron directly for 5-7 seconds. Do not pull or stretch the iron when moving it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Dark-colored fabrics still need to be soaked separately, as they are likely to fade. You can add a few spoonfuls of salt to fix the color.
    Knitted fabrics must have their lateral shrinkage rate specifically marked. Their loose structure makes them prone to deformation. If the seller states a shrinkage rate >3% when you buy the fabric, then this type of fabric must be pre-shrunk; otherwise, the garments made from it will definitely shrink. Don’t take any chances!
