The Origin of Camping Caps

What’s a camp cap? A camp cap is a trendy, young cap. Camp caps can be derived from “single-speed bicycle” sports in the last century, from 60 to 70. At that time, all the athletes wore line-shaped hats that were the former of camp caps. Initially, the brim of camp caps was very short. Until 1997, Supreme, a skateboard brand, revised and renamed these caps, which have become camp caps nowadays.
Due to the 5-panel structure, camp caps are also called 5-panel caps. The 5 panels mean one front panel, 2 top panels, and 2 side panels. Usually, the brim is flat-brimmed and the back closure is designed with adjustable bands that are very convenient to adjust the size.
Types of Camping Caps

In the hot summer, an outdoor camp cap is a must-have headwear that can provide sun protection, wind resistance, water resistance, and mosquito resistance. It can also protect the head and keep it cool. Moreover, camp caps are pretty nice-looking. A pretty camp cap can elevate the whole look and enhance personality. Although camp caps are diverse, here are the classic styles below.
1. Visor Cap/Hollow-top Cap
Caps without top panels or crowns are called visor caps or hollow-top caps, which are the coolest caps in summer. Usually, visor caps are made from plastic and canvas. Visor caps offer sun protection and block sunlight, and they are breathable, fresh, simple, trendy, fashionable, yet versatile, which makes them suitable for urban casual zones, running, riding, etc. The hollow-top design of visor caps means there is no block for the head, which makes visor caps suitable for running, tennis, golfing, and other sports. For women who have long hair, wearing a visor cap only requires tying up their hair, which can show their maximum beauty. Therefore, visor caps are a great choice for women while running to show their healthy look and personalized temperament, which makes them a great sight in Marathons.
In comparison, men should choose baseball caps for running. Due to the physiological differences between males and females, males’ running speed is better than females’, and males’ sweat rate is much higher than females’. Some visor caps don’t have sweatbands, but baseball caps always have, which have a better wrapping to lock sweat from dropping into the eyes.
2. Gorra de béisbol
A baseball cap has a rounded crown with a long brim, which has developed with baseball. The long brim is a characteristic of original baseball caps to block sunlight for baseball players. Later, baseball caps with team badges became a symbol of the baseball team, and their fans wear matching baseball caps that support. Some people wear baseball caps for sun protection. As time goes by, baseball caps have become one of the trendy hats and are diverse in types. If sorted baseball caps, there are generally 4 sorted ways.
Namely, sorted by crown, brim, patterns, and other ornaments, and these 4 sorted types are crossed with each other, which do not have independent existence. However, according to different wearing ways, scenes, and outfits, the focus point is different when selecting a baseball cap.
Sorted by the Crown (structured or constructed)
Sorted by the crown, baseball caps are divided into structured baseball caps and constructed baseball caps. Structured baseball caps are with a buckram at the front panels, generally called baseball caps, which are suitable for petite girls or short people. In baseball caps, the buckram can be seen on the inside of the front panel(s), which makes a structured front. The purpose of the buckram is to give baseball caps their silhouette regardless of head shape. Constructed baseball caps are also called dad caps or unstructured baseball caps, have a soft front panel(s), which is suitable for tall people. Please pay attention that structured baseball caps are shaped, but can make heads look bigger.

Sorted by the Brim (curved or flat brim)
Sorted by the brim, baseball caps can be divided into flat-brimmed baseball caps and curved-brimmed baseball caps. In general, curved-brimmed baseball caps can better modify face shapes and are usually worn straight. However, flat-brimmed baseball caps are more suitable for wearing backward because they don’t have curved brims that can block the neck. That’s why flat-brimmed baseball caps are more suitable for wearing backward. Of course, both types of baseball caps are suitable for wearing backward and straight forward. The right place to wear a baseball cap is 3 to 5 cm above the hairline and the center of the forehead.
Sorted by Patterns (solid color and patterns)
Solid-colored baseball caps are essential, fashionable yet versatile. You don’t need to have more, but have one. In addition, solid-colored baseball caps also include simple patchwork styles. Therefore, when choosing a baseball cap, you just need to choose by your complexion. Mostly, some solid-colored baseball caps have with simple logo on the front panel, which is simple yet classic. Patterned baseball caps can be divided into embroidered patterns and printing patterns, including letter printing and pattern printing. If the logo of a patterned baseball cap is complex, then it’s suggested to choose outfits with simple patterns to avoid the whole look being too patterned and messy.

Baseball Caps with Various Ornaments
With the development of fashion and baseball caps, there are more and more ornaments to add to baseball caps, such as metal rings, rivets, and more. Different ornaments can bring different styles to baseball caps. For example, rivet ornaments are pretty cool, and rhinestones are street styles.
Baseball caps are suitable for outdoor hiking, camping, climbing, and other activities. However, the shape of baseball caps is pretty fixed, which is not so convenient for storing due to the hard brim.
3. Gorra de pico

In general, most people are confused about the difference between baseball caps and peaked caps. However, it’s very easy to tell the difference between baseball caps and peaked caps. Initially, peaked caps were the headwear that hunters wore for hunting. Due to the brim shape that looked like a duck tongue, they were called peaked caps. The difference between baseball caps and peaked caps is in the shape and length of the brim. Usually, peaked caps have shorter brims from 2 to 4 inches, and most brims are flat. Versa vice, baseball caps have longer brims, and most brims are curved.
All these 3 types of caps are pretty in shapes, but sun protection, waterproof, and windproof are general, and wide-brimmed hats are more suitable for outdoors.
4. Sombrero

In general, sun hats have pretty wide brims to provide excellent sun protection and block strong sunlight, commonly made from cloth, canvas, straw, PVC, etc. Shown as the picture below.

Compared to the above visor caps, baseball caps, and peaked caps, sun hats offer better sun protection, which makes them suitable for summer camping, vacations, and casual occasions. However, please note that sun hats are very bad at these functions – water resistance and fast drying.
5. Sombrero de cubo
Bucket hats are also called fisherman hats, with a pretty narrow brim and a deep crown. Most bucket hats are made from 190t polyester, denim, canvas, or heavy fabrics like Harris wool. In general, the structure of bucket hats is wrapped by steel wires outer, then matched with a convenient storing bag. Due to the full brim with narrow-down design, bucket hats not only can block full sunlight, but their looks are pretty, which is favored by people. Besides that, many celebrities and stars wear them. Therefore, bucket hats are suitable for both urban outdoors and countryside settings.

From the picture above, Sean Connelly on the left side wore a bucket hat in the movie – Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade (1989). Due to the bucket shape, bucket hats were also called bucket hats, initially derived from Irish, which was the rain-resistant and wind-resistant gear for fishermen and farmers. Because of the convenient storage (after folding, can be stored in jacket pockets, bucket hats have become popular among the upper class in the UK for hiking, hunting, and fishing. In the 1980s, bucket hats were given a sense of music due to hip-hop trends.
Bucket hats are one o women’s most favored hats among all types of hats. The brim of a bucket hat looks like the hem of a skirt, just like the picture above, which makes bucket hats emphasize femininity beauty.
* The Brim of Bucket Hat
Commonly, the inclined angles of bucket hat brims are different, but can generally be divided into two types.
The First type: The inclined angle is pretty large, about 150 degrees, and the brim opens on both sides.
The Second Type: The inclined angle of bucket hat brims is prone to be vertical and extending down.
Here is the comparison picture that can directly feel the difference between both types.

* The Crown of Bucket Hats
There are also two types of bucket hat crowns – flat crowns or rounded crowns. The rounded round looks like a cloche; therefore, here is a more professional and vivid name for this type of bucket hat: Cloche Hats. Cloche hats, bell-shaped women’s hats, were invented by French milliner Caroline Reboux in 1908. Cloche hats were especially popular from 1922 to 1933, and the name cloche is derived from the French word – cloche.

6. Boonie Hat
When talking about boonies (also called boonie hats), people might be confused. Boonie hats are headgear for outdoor activities like fishing, camping, hiking, hunting, military, or tactical operations. Boonies are the transliteration of rounded hats and the shape of a boonie hat looks like common bowlers that we know. The structure of a boonie hat includes ventilated holes on the top crown and a woven ribbon between the crown and the brim for plugging branches or grass to boost the concealment; there is a drawstring to fix or easily carry on.
Sombreros Boonie

In recent years, due to their unique structures, boonie hats have taken the dominant place in army hats. In the wild fields, boonie hats have possibly taken the conventional battle hats, which are suitable for outdoors. Their wide brims can offer great sun protection in deserts, prevent flying insects from dropping into collars in jungles. When you don’t need them, you can roll them up through the drawstring, which looks like cowboy hats, favored by camping lovers.
7. Sombrero de fatiga
Here is another outdoor hat called fatigue hats that was earliest applied for outdoor use. Most fatigue hats have rounded tops and can be divided into 3 types – with brims, without brims, and with brims and earflaps.

The foldable cover for ears and back neck can offer great protection for the neck, ears, and face in bad weather. Commonly, this type of fatigue hat is great at waterproofing and quick drying. Moreover, the water-repellent index is pretty high, particularly for fatigue hats with brims that are very suitable for outdoor camping. During summer sun explosion, the cover can prevent the neck and head from sunburn; if there is no sunlight, rolling up the cover is very cool and breathable.
8. Anti-Mosquito Hat

Anti-mosquito hats are specially designed hats that prevent mosquito and insect bites. Usually, the top and the back are made from canvas; the front is made from chemical mesh woven textiles. Such a design can effectively protect against mosquito and insect bites without affecting sight and hearing. For anti-mosquito and other insect bites, pulling down the mesh cover can completely protect the whole head, face, and neck from insect bites. Without using this function, rolling up the mesh cover on the brim through buttons. Therefore, anti-mosquito hats are suitable for hiking, fishing, and camping around outdoor jungles and areas covered with waterweed.
9. Camping Balaclava

If you want a hat that is suitable for both urban cities and outdoors with protection for head, neck, and face, then the hat is a camping balaclava. The name balaclava is named after the small town Balaklava on the Crimean Peninsula, where the climate is cold and local people all wear hats that can protect their neck and face. Later, British people reformed these hats, which became the balaclava that we know today. Nowadays, the meaning of balaclava has been extended, and hats that can cover the whole face with eye and nose holes are called balaclava.
When wearing, camping balaclavas are detachable, with a face mask and a neck cover, made from quick-dry fabrics. The UPF50 design can offer ideal cover for faces when sunlight is strong. Moreover, there are many ways of wearing a camping balaclava to keep breathable due to the mesh ventilated design.
UV Lights & Protección solar
1. Ultraviolet(UV Lights)
Sunlight can be divided into visible light, ultraviolet, infrared light, and a small amount of cosmic rays. Sun protection means anti-ultraviolet. There are 3 types of ultraviolet – UVA, UVB, UVC, and only UVA and UVB can break through the cloud layer to the earth.
UVA
UVA has the longest wavelength of ultraviolet rays and cannot be absorbed by the upper ozone layer, so it can penetrate the dermis (the layer of skin or the thick layer of living tissue below the epidermis) and deep into skin tissue and darken skin. It damages lipids and collagen resulting into skin aging or skin cancer. So, UVA not only stimulates pigment synthesis to darken the skin, but also is a predisposing factor for skin aging and wrinkling.
UVB
UVB is the middle wave ultraviolet, and it can reach the dermis, causing skin burn, red spots, sunburn, etc. However, most UVB is absorbed by the ozone layer and can be blocked by glasses, sun protection umbrellas, and clothes. To make it easy to understand, UVA mainly damages collagen and elastin in the skin, leading to skin moisture loss and aging. 70% UVB can be absorbed by the stratum corneum, affecting cell DNA and keratinocytes, leading to sunburn and darkened skin. UVA is all-year-round on Earth, and UVB is pretty weak in winter. And part of UVB can be blocked by glasses and clouds.
2. Why Is It Easier to Get Sunburn at Plateau Areas?
In plateau regions, the rarity of the air and the sunlight’s intensity both increase, and as a result, ultraviolet rays cannot be blocked effectively. In addition, high levels of ultraviolet rays split a lot of oxygen, known as active oxygen, which is harmful and speeds up the aging of skin. Due to the double effect of active oxygen and ultraviolet rays, protection becomes essential, especially for individuals living in plateau areas. Sunburn can still occur even on cloudy days as thin cloud layers still allow 20 to 40 percent of UV rays to penetrate. Therefore, protection is recommended prior to camping.
It is essential to remember that cold temperatures do not equate to weaker ultraviolet rays. Generally, higher altitudes result in higher levels of ultraviolet rays. In the case of snow mountains, the effect is even stronger because the snow reflects ultraviolet rays. With every 300 meters in elevation, sunlight increases by 4%. Also, snow reflects 85 percent of ultraviolet rays while sand and muddy water reflect 50%. Thus, especially in snow-covered mountains, the higher the elevation, the more intense the ultraviolet radiation becomes.
3. The Most Effective Sun Protection Ways
Usually, the methods of sun protection are categorized into two: physical and chemical sun protection. Chemical sun protection refers to the use of sunscreens, and physical sun protection refers to the use of sun protected hats, sunproof clothes and sun umbrellas.
How to Use A Camping Cap?
How to Wear A Camping Cap?

In a broad sense, the camping caps are made of light materials that are very snug to the head. Most camping caps are from American brands. Therefore, the hat shape tailoring is based on the American and European people. However, American and European head shapes are narrow on both sides and three-dimensional at the front and back, and thus the shape is opposite to Asian people. Here are the methods of wearing a camping cap for Asian people.
When selecting a camping cap, the one made with softer or flexible materials, like denim or washed twill fabric, would provide the needed protection as well as the shape needed for a camping cap. Also, the hat type should be hard so the camping cap can cover the head.
The camping cap should have its brim turned up a little as to show the forehead. To maintain a stylish look, bangs can be tucked away under a camping hat. For everyday commutes, black, gray, and white are always a safe choice. If the caps are brightly colored or patterned, the outfit should be black, gray, or white, so as to balance the brightly colored camping cap.
Sombreros y formas de la cara
Different people have different face shapes, which means their suitable hats are different. Elevating the whole look of hats, you need to wear a hat according to your face shape.
- Cara redonda
Round face featuring plump facial lines, and the contour is close to a circle. Because the facial shape angle is few, then round-faced people should choose hats that can lengthen their face proportion visually, and can enhance the sharpness of their face. Therefore, baseball caps and berets are a great choice for them.
- Cara cuadrada
Square face features a wide forehead, straight cheekbones, a pronounced jaw, and overly sharp facial lines. Due to the sharpened facial lines, then people who have square faces should select hats that can soften their facial lines, like bowlers, cloches, and bucket hats.

- Long Face
Those with a long face should wear hats that help shorten and balance their features. As such, bucket hats, peaked hats, and berets are especially suitable for them.
