A Fun Look at Hat Stickers: Why Do People Leave the Sticker on Their Baseball Caps

Intro

Every time a colleague rushes to work in the morning wearing a hat, my first thought is that he must have overslept; it seems that hats have become a symbol of laziness. As the saying goes: “A hat can solve a thousand worries, covering one’s head after a night’s sleep!” The most convenient tool for relieving worries is, of course, a baseball cap.

A Fun Story about Hat tags

In September 2010, The New York Times reported that in the first decade of the new millennium, “more than 100 suspects in serious crimes in New York City were wearing clothing with the NY logo.”

Many victims of robbery could not recall the physical characteristics of the perpetrators at all, only remembering that their hats had “NY” printed on them.

Should we remove the tag from our baseball cap or not?

The caps we commonly see come in a wide variety of styles. Many questions arise, such as: Why are some baseball caps fully closed and non-adjustable? What is that mysterious logo on the side? Why do some people wear hats without removing the tags?In this article, as an experienced hat manufacturer, Aung Crown will explain them in details.

The question of whether or not to remove the tags from hats originated with Fitted baseball caps. In those days, the people who were really into hats were mostly Black, but Black guys were generally very poor. To make others think they always had money to buy new clothes, Black guys made a choice: not to remove the tags! What was originally a money-saving skill gradually evolved into an unwritten rule.

The earliest baseball caps were all fitted, meaning they weren’t adjustable. Around 2009, the snapback style replaced the fitted baseball cap. The appeal of snapbacks is obvious: no sizing headaches at all. With just one adjustable strap, it can fit any head size. It’s convenient and usually more affordable too.

One more thing to note is that not all hip-hop hats are called baseball caps. Only those with a flat brim (not completely without any curve) can be called “baseball caps.” However, people often use “truck hats,” “five-panel caps,” and “curved brim caps” as baseball caps.

Baseball cap brands you should know: New Era

Getting back to the main topic, let’s talk about the logo on the side. How popular is the NY logo worldwide? In the United States, baseball caps sell about 43.75 million units annually, with the industry generating a total yearly revenue of about $8.42 billion. The brand New Era holds a 66% market share. This brand owes its success to the NY logo it prominently featured in its early days.

In 2014, New Era produced about 90 million baseball caps, with the NY-branded caps being the best-selling in Europe and Asia.

But do you know how it started as a small workshop and grew into the hat king that now dominates the casual, trendy, and sports markets, with annual sales exceeding 10 billion RMB? Moreover, very few hats can be successful in both the sports and fashion worlds, but New Era has done it!

New Era was one of the earliest companies to purchase and use sewing machines. Even now, with the use of high-tech machines to make hats, each hat still retains the original 22 manual processes during production to ensure its superior quality.
