Pure Cotton Tees: The Shrinkage and Washing Tips for No Deformation
Published On: February 17, 2025 By: chen hui

Pure cotton Tees are very comfortable to wear and great for moisture-wicking and breathability. Because of the great absorption of cotton, pure cotton Tees are shrunk after washing. In daily life, we can apply some washing tips to lower the rate of shrinkage. When washing pure cotton T-shirts, we should use cold water, do not soak them too long, and avoid acid detergent and brushing too hard. Here we – Aung Crown a professional custom clothing manufacturer will introduce pure cotton T-shirts in detail whether they are shrunk or not and if yes, how to avoid that without deformation.

Are Pure Cotton Tees Shrunk?
Cotton is great at water absorption, especially when it absorbs water, the volume of cotton will expand, leading cotton yarns to become shorter and deforming. Therefore, pure cotton tees are shrunk and the rate of shrinkage is from 2% to 5%. Generally speaking, manufacturers consider this point, and clothing made of pure cotton won’t affect the wearing experience. Of course, some pure cotton tees are processed with special treatments, particularly for famous brands. Usually, these tees are processed with alkali treatment before being woven into cotton cloth, so the shrinkage rate is pretty low and even can say that they are not shrunk at all. If washing follows the washing tip on the tag, there is no problem at all.

How to Wah Pure Cotton T-shirts without Deformation?
Wash with cold water
Hot water can lead pure cotton T-shirts to deformation. Therefore, please wash pure cotton T-shirts with cold water and please do not scrub too hard, otherwise it also can lead to deformation. Please do not tumble dry and it’s suggested to dry naturally. It’s comfortable, breathable, moisture-wicking to wear a pure cotton tee, moreover, it’s non-toxic to humans. Moreover, cotton is elementary to dye, and colored cotton tees will fade a little bit, particularly for dark-colored cotton T-shirts. So, please separate them when washing.
Do not soak pure cotton tees too long
While washing pure cotton tees, the first step is to mix the cotton detergent with the solution. Then, soak pure cotton T-shirts. Usually, summer clothing is quite thin, and pure cotton is poor at wrinkle resistance. Therefore, the best water temperature for washing is 30℃ to 35℃ /86℉ to 95℉. However, soak pure cotton tees for several minutes and do not soak them too long. After washing, please do not wring them out to dry, hang them in dry, well-ventilated places, and do not explore them under sunlight in case of fade.

Wash with acid detergent
Pure cotton T-shirts are not alkali resistant. Therefore, it’s suggested to wash pure cotton tees with detergents that contain acid, which can reach neutralization. It’s much better to use cotton detergent. Generally speaking, we need to wash or change summer garments frequently to clean sweat on time. In addition, detergents are much better than washing powders because powders are harder to dissolve than detergents. Moreover, washing powders that cannot completely dissolve will deform pure cotton tees permanently.
Avoid hard scrubbing hardly
Usually, pure cotton tees are designed with a single-layer collar, which is quite thin. Therefore, please do not scrub them hard and dry them in a tidy status to avoid pulling them back. The collar should not be scrubbed horizontally and do not wing out, just hang to dry without exposure to sunlight and under high temperatures.

The Right Ways to Wash Pure Cotton T-shirts
- Pure cotton tees can be machine-washed or hand-washed. Cotton is poor at stretching, so, it’s better not to scrub too hard; scrub gently.
- Turn pure cotton T-shirts over, when washing them, soak them in lukewarm water under 40℃/104℉, and then wash them by hand. Please do not use strong alkali detergents because they can cause cotton clothing to deform.
- Please separate wash when there are light-colored cotton outfits and dark-colored cotton outfits together to avoid color mixing.
- Besides white pure cotton tees, please do not use detergents or washing powers that contain blench. Otherwise, it will cause color fading. Also, cannot directly pull the washing powders on pure cotton tees, either. Because it also can cause color fading.
